Young people have fresh ideas, new perspectives, and a genuine desire to make things happen. The Youth In Philanthropy Program taps into the energy and boundless enthusiasm of young people. The program has two components:

  • Youth grantmaking board that provides resources for youth-developed projects; and
  • Training and educational sessions for youth on project design and grantwriting.

What is the KIDS PLUS Youth In Philanthropy Board?

In 2000, in collaboration with our long-time partner, the Minnesota Power Foundation, the Northland Foundation developed the KIDS PLUS Youth In Philanthropy Board. The program provides a venue for teaching young people about the art of giving and the importance of civic involvement. As part of the Foundation’s KIDS PLUS Program, Youth in Philanthropy is designed to infuse youth into leadership and decision-making roles. This grantmaking board is made up of young people in grades 8-12 and adults from around the region. Grant money up to $1,000 is awarded for projects that are planned, written, and carried out by young people with the support of an adult advisor.

How Does the Board Make Grants?

The Board meets three times per year to make funding decisions on youth-developed grants for projects that are planned, written, and carried out by young people with the support of adult advisors.

Grant awards up to $1,000 are available to schools and youth-serving organizations in the seven-county region of northeastern Minnesota, which includes Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis Counties; as well as in Superior, Wisconsin.

To date, nearly 290 proposals totaling over $245,000 have been funded. These projects provide hundreds of area children and youth with opportunities to assume leadership roles in efforts such as peer mentoring programs, community beautification, after-school opportunities, cultural diversity learning, and intergenerational activities.
