How to Apply/Grant Guidelines and Directions

The Youth In Philanthropy Board invites young people in the seven-county region of northeastern Minnesota, which includes Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis Counties; and Superior, Wisconsin to prepare a grant proposal for up to $1,000.

The project and grant application must be planned, written, and carried out by young people involved in a youth organization with the support of an adult advisor. Through the Youth In Philanthropy Program, young people have an opportunity to develop and implement projects that will benefit their schools, organizations, and communities.

What Are the Upcoming Grant Application Deadlines?

All applications must be received at the Northland Foundation by:

January 1st– for Spring Project Funding
April 1st
for Summer Project Funding
July 1st for Fall Project Funding
October 1st for Winter Project Funding

Decisions are made within 30-45 days after the deadlines.

Who Can Apply for Funding?

Young people who are involved in:

  • Youth groups (4-H, Girl Scouts, etc.)
  • Youth-serving organizations/programs (Youth Centers, etc.)
  • Organizations within schools and communities (Peer Helpers, Student Council, etc.) that are located in the seven-county region of northeastern Minnesota and Superior, Wisconsin.

What Projects Qualify for Grant Consideration?

  • Projects that are planned, written, and carried out by one or more youth and supported by an adult advisor.
  • Projects that take place in communities within the following Minnesota counties: Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis and Superior, Wisconsin.
  • Projects that address a community, school, or organizational need and engage young people as leaders and/or volunteers.
  • Projects associated with a nonprofit organization or that have a relationship with a fiscal agent.

What Projects Do Not Qualify for Grant Consideration?

  • Support for individuals
  • Requests for scholarships
  • Fund-raising campaigns or dinners, ticket sales, and similar activities
  • Requests for individual or team expenses to participate in competitions
  • Funding to build, renovate, or maintain buildings
  • Direct support to religious organizations, programs, or events (although support for youth activities for the larger community will be considered from faith-based organizations)
  • Projects planned solely by adults

How Do Youth Prepare a Grant Application?

Grant applications can be downloaded from the Web site. If you prefer a hard copy mailed to you, please call or email the staff listed below.

  • Provide all contact information on the first page of the application form.
  • Answer the following questions outlined on the grant application:
    • What is the goal of the youth proposed project? Please describe the project.
    • Who will benefit from this project? Estimate the number of people to be served.
    • Why is the project needed and important to your organization?
    • How will the project happen?  List activities that will be done.  Identify how many people will work on the project: Youth __     Adults __
    • When and Where will this project take place?
  • Complete the budget form.

NOTE: If necessary, you may attach additional pages or re-create the application form.

The above criteria may be used as general guidelines; however, each KIDS PLUS Youth In Philanthropy Grant Application will be reviewed on its individual merits.
