How to Apply

Applicants interested in applying for grant funds are strongly encouraged to contact the Northland Foundation to discuss project ideas with program staff as the first step. To discuss a project idea, please contact Erik Torch, Grant Program Manager, (218) 723-4040 or 1-800-433-4045.

Pre-Application

To apply for funds, organizations are asked to submit a pre-application form. The pre-application process helps determine if a program fits within the Foundation’s grantmaking areas of interest.

Pre-application forms are available for download from our web site. If you have questions or need to request a hard copy, please call or email Erik Torch, Grant Program Manager.

The Foundation’s Board of Trustees reviews pre-applications on a monthly basis. Pre-applications must be received by the 15th of each month for review by the board the following month.

Following this initial review, applicants are notified by letter if a full proposal is requested and when it is due. On average, our consideration of a full proposal takes 60 to 90 days.

Reporting

Both progress and final reporting forms are available for download from the web site. If you have questions or need a hard copy of a reporting form, please call or email Carole Saylor, Grants Coordinator. You must include the Project Number with your request for forms.

What We Do Not Fund

The Foundation generally does not consider requests for:

  • Religious programs or activities (faith-based or religious organizations may apply for support for activities that benefit the larger community, but not for those which have religious purposes);
  • Endowment campaigns;
  • Buildings or major equipment;
  • Individuals or private foundations;
  • Fundraising campaigns or dinners, ticket sales, festivals, celebrations, and similar activities; and
  • Traditional government services or replacement of funding for which public support has been cut.
