The Grant Program provides financial and technical resources to nonprofit organizations serving the people of Aitkin, Carlton, Cook, Itasca, Koochiching, Lake, and St. Louis Counties. Support is directed toward three areas of interest to help individuals, families, and communities throughout the region to grow and prosper. A Voice for Change

Jodi Slick, Executive Director of Common Ground Construction
Jodi Slick isn’t afraid of change. She has been a community organizer, a teacher, and a solid waste recycling coordinator. Her eclectic background serves her well as the executive director of Common Ground.
Common Ground is a social enterprise that serves as General Contractor for its nonprofit parent organization, Northern Communities Land Trust, building green, affordable homes for low and middle income people. It also provides training and jobs to underserved populations. Revenues help to sustain Common Ground’s operations and support the Land Trust.
As one of eight nonprofit participants in the Northland Foundation’s pilot Social Enterprise Initiative, Common Ground took on major change. The problem wasn’t that the company was failing but that it was growing quickly and in many directions. With help from the Initiative’s business consultant, Slick made hard decisions, streamlined operations, and set a plan to manage growth. Common Ground is now uniquely prepared to navigate the sometimes unpredictable path to success – a little like its executive director.
